He has always pushed past barriers, being part of the early group of black prime time broadcast journalists to integrate major radio and television stations in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and the Greensboro-High Point-Winston-Salem markets of North Carolina. At the age of 49, he began studying Chinese medicine, a knowledge base that would later prove vital for saving the life of his yet unborn son.
